Before heading to glorious Hawaii, it is essential that you have passports that are valid for six months beyond the period for which you plan to stay. Besides having a valid passport, citizens from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia must stay less than 90 days, have a return or one-way ticket and enter on an airline or cruise ship in the visa waiver programme. United States citizens need an official ID to board a plane, such as a driver’s license, while South Africans need to acquire a visa from their local US embassy.

Hawaii Visa Waiver Programme (VWP)

Under the VWP, you can enter Hawaii as long as you have a machine-readable passport (MRP) with a bar code printed on the page with your digital photograph. If you are eligible to travel to Hawaii using the VWP, you also need to own biometric identification measures, such as your fingerprint or iris details, in addition to your MRP. Currently, it is compulsory for all travelers to possess a digital photograph and two fingerprints registered with an inkless scanner soon after arriving at any airport in Hawaii.

This action is undertaken for safety and security reasons as well as to monitor and prevent visitors under the VWP from staying beyond the allocated 90 days.
